Nana’s spirit lives on with this easy to make recipe which continues to be handed down through 3 generations and served at many family gatherings.

Ingredients:

1 cup brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 cup of flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 tsp vanila

In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Mix in the beaten egg. Set aside.
In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the butter mixture to the dry ingredients. Add in the vanilla and the chopped walnuts and stir until combined completely.
Place mixture in a shallow, square pan and bake for 30 minutes.
Let cool before icing and cutting into bars.

Icing:
As an added treat, Nana would ice these bars and add sprinkles on top.
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
1/4 cup of butter, softened to room temperature
1 tbsp. milk
sprinkles

In a small bowl, combine the icing sugar with the butter. Add in milk to create a smooth, spreadable icing. Add more icing sugar or milk if necessary to get the proper consistency.
Spread on top of the bars and sprinkle away. Cut into bars.
